Candy's Story

I listed myself under Thornridge, (which was much better than going to Thornton, which is probably why I listed that, knew more people there too, anyway hope there is a place to add another high school on here) but actually was transferred to Thornton, when they did the "boundary change - and bussing", didn't find that to be a good thing. I started working for the railroad right out of school, in 1974, but am currently on disability with back problems, which made it unsafe and very uncomfortable to do my job there, that was 3 years ago already! 2006. I've been with Larry Birkenfeld for 32 years, since 1977. This "story wizard" says "how do you hope old friends remember you?" not quite sure how to answer that, so you tell me, please!! What do you remember about me? Hope to hear from many old grade school, high school friends. What do I do to relax: watch TV, warm water therapy, enjoy doing things out in the sun, pools, beaches, planting flowers, also riding on Larry's bike, which doesn't happen so much anymore, with my back problems, camping, travel (probably why I would rather live in a warmer climate) - not much of a winter person. When asked what the wildest thing I did in school..Hard to say..so many things! Have a funny memory of cutting class, went with Claudia to a friends apt. his name was Cal, when we returned to school, this was at Thornton, the school cops were waiting there calling on the radio "we have them", brought us to the office, told us they staked out Cals Roast Beef, acct of the note we left on someone's car saying we were going to Cal's - Also hung out at Wampaum a lot. Moved so much during my school years, went to Waterman, Lincoln, back to Waterman, Diekman, Dirksen, Thornridge and Thornton. Lived all over Dolton, moved to FL in 2nd or 3rd grade for about a year, Lived on Michigan, Grant, Lincoln, Meadow Lane, Murray, Greenwood, then when I married the first time right after I turned 19 to John Duvall, moved back to the same apt. I lived in as a child, on Lincoln, divorced after a bad car wreck, then Larry and I got together, he moved into that apt. with me and a couple years later we bought a home on Hastings, lived there for 18 years,(after all the moving I did as a kid, stayed in one place for a long time) now we reside in Steger, Miller Woods since 95, and hopefully will not have to move again, unless of course to a nicer climate. sports: Go Bears! but as far as baseball, like both cubs and sox, whoever is doing the best, as long as it's a chicago team doing well, I'll watch. TV shows, too many to list, but do like Dancing with the stars and All my Children, watched since it was 1/2 hour long and in black & white. Our dogs have been our obsessions, always German Shepherds, the best 2 were Max and his son Gus. Now we have 4 yr old Riecher (the biker) Von Haus Tatum, is his AKC registered name. He's my baby! He's made the bathtub into his bed. No kids, wasn't able to after that car accident in 77, (devastated by that - bad part of my life) but have a step son, Larry Jr. who is 40 now! To be truly happy? hmmm, maybe just move to a warmer area, preferably in the mountains, home with a lot more land, woods and more animals - we have 2 acres, 1 acre of it is woods (Birkenfeld Woods)now -tho it's in this cold region, so of course a pool and hot tub would be a must (don't have that now)- doesn't take much to make me happy. My current age is 53. When I was 12, I thought that people my age now would be too old to do anything fun. I was so completely wrong. Don't feel that 53 is old now - or do I? Think that I do FEEL old now, but not in my mind. Working hard? hmmm. YES- until recently. Had jobs since I was about 14, waitressing, or whatever I could find, then at the ripe ole age of 17 - I've been working on the railroad, all the live long days and nights. Some tough times tho, but knew many people when I started there and then made even more friends, worked the extra board for years - that's tough! Then was a crew dispatcher, that was fun. Got to talk to a lot of people, and make more friends. Before I recieved disability - retireme...Expand for more
nt pension. my last position was in the payroll dept doing the switchman and engineer's payroll. My first crush - not sure where he is now but he was cutest kid in the school, it was Jim Caudle in grade school. We had matching jackets LOL. Not sure how people describe me, that's a hard question! Others can do that better than me. So you tell me! Silly question about how I dress: Pretty much the same I guess, (don't we all?) jeans - Harley shirts, or sweaters, like summmer clothes better. shorts and tops, whatever..Tho love my "laying around the house clothes." comfy clothes :) The weirdest job I ever had was at a greasy spoon in Dolton, next to Nick's Sports page, where Freddie's was at -wasn't there very long, named "The Mad Hatter" - just cuz it had signs on the booths that said "Don't eat candy in the booths" - people always gave me a hard time with that! I share my home with my husband and Riecher. If I had one do over - I would have went to college and have a career. Forensics would have been interesting to me - something in that field. Instead I became a lifer at the R.R. In 10 years, I hope to be healthy and wealthy. Healthy - very important, almost died in 96 from double viral pneumonia, 30 days on life support and 3 months in the hospital, laid up for 2 years. Having Larry by my side constantly is what I believe pulled me through that. Lost a good friend, Connie Brandt to the same virus. Also too many serious car accidents, the one in 77 was almost a killer too. Wealthy fairly important, living comfortably is fine with me. Tho more would be better! More is always better, right? I'm going to get there by: I have no idea, win the lottery?. About the only hope these days with the economy the way it is. My oldest friend is Sharon McManigle Birkenfeld, friends since 2nd grade, ended up marrying brothers, so now we're family. What would surpise everyone at your high school reunion, not sure 'bout that, will have to find out at the next reunion! My first job was at an answering service, what I got paid? not sure, am sure it wasn't much to answer phones. What I remember most about it: Is it was at my dad's friends home, the home looked more like a funeral home. Strange furnishings. My dad always made sure I had a job! After that Sharon McManigle, Claudia Senier, Rae Smykowski, Al Robledo, and a few other friends all worked at Town & Country Motel, waitressing, desk clerk, even served drinks back then when I was 16! Shouldn't that have been against the law? lol. When I first started at the R.R. we were paid about 45.00 a day, which back then was a lot of money, made as much as the men that were raising families, was making about 4x as much when I retired -disability. But then I got married, not a good idea when I was 19, should have stayed at home and continued to make money... divorced... then along came Larry - to save the day! Stole my heart - My hero! Childhood memories: There's a lot, and a lot of moving - but hanging around with the kids from Lincoln/Waterman/Diekman/Dirksen, cheerleading with Marianne Tsilis, Starr Mangler, and others, playing spin the bottle at Tara Von Sydow's, Getting caught making prank calls with Chris Allen by her parents, dancing in the Pottinger's (Cynthia and Denise) basement also sleepovers at my house with MaryBeth Johnson, Marlene Walczak, and more friends. Riding bikes around the neighborhood, a pony in my backyard on Lincoln in 3rd grade, till they made us move him to my grandparents farm in MI, My parents, my sister and her husband also had horses we kept in Dyer, IN (lots of picnics there)- good memories! Also those crazy days I hung out at Barney's hot dog stand along with so many other friends. Going to see Sly and the family Stone, getting caught in the riots, always going to concerts, remember an all day one at Soldiers' Field, with awhole nother group of friends, turned out to be a good thing moving around Dolton so much, as I did meet many different groups of friends, that I'll never forget. Tho many are gone now, I'm still here, life is good :) And now I'm wondering why I filled this story wizard out!
